EVIL AND DARKNESS

This jar is another jar representing nightmares, but also the evil and darkness we all have inside us. When I think about this I immediately think villains. The first evil villain that comes to mind is the ice queen from the film 'Narnia'. The sophistication of the ice queen relates to what I wanted to put through in my photo shoot; glamorous but dark.


Masha Mel
Masha Mel is a photographer who is part of the Ardorous Collective. I really like her work and below are a few selected images from her website. A lot of Mel's photography is portraiture and I really like how she captured in subjects in each of the images. The girl with the pink, dressed in all pink, holding pink flowers is colour coordinated, and looks like someone from the past. The personalities of each of the subjects are transferred to the viewer through the image, as the models look directly to the camera, so it is like they look at you. Directly looking at the camera does look quite spooky, because it is like the subject can see you.

Masha Mel, Lana Del Rey and the ice queen inspired my "Evil and Darkness" photography shoot. I first created a floral head band made from red fake flowers, because red is a colour often associated with evil. I quite like the outcome of my photography, and went on to further edit the best of them to produce photography to a good standard despite having a normal household camera.

-The Jar

The jar for this theme, is to represent the darkness within us. The inside of the lid will be a mirror symbolising the face of evil... Through the mirror I want to shown evil lies within everyone, and we all could be evil. I hope to paint the whole jar black symbolising darkness.  Inside of the jar will have a dislocated dolls arm standing upright, as it is trying to reach out. Glow in the dark stick, will be used to represent the light coming from the darkness. From inside the jar there will be different objects sticking up and sticking out, to add dimension to the piece and to relate more to this idea of evil and darkness.

Jar Design - ORIGAMI

ORIGAMI 

Origami is the art of paper folding which originated in Japan. I find origami really interesting and eye catching, so how paper can be transformed to create an object of some kind. Transform the flat paper into 3D interests me because I think its a great way of using paper which could be considered quite a simple and basic material. I am putting origami cranes into a jar because I like the paper folding technique. I have had practice creating cranes and drawing them, and having this object in the jar will look really good. Each crane will be created from individually decorated card, using repeated patterns, a technique I learnt from researching the work of Ingo Giezendanne, http://ifeakinroyejegraphics.blogspot.co.uk/

The surface design of some of the cranes will also have painted designs like Minna Gilligan's felt tips, but instead I will various colours of paint to create this effect, but I think it would look neater.

My origami crane drawings.

Above are my  illustrations of origami crane, practicing with different ways of presenting cranes. The first image uses continuous line drawing on coloured card to produce images of cranes which are then coloured in used oil pastels. The next image is a simple like drawing, a piece inspired by Hennie Haworth's style of work, as she uses simple line to illustrate various images. I like the simplicity of the image, and the use of only black and white to create an image. The next image is a photograph of origami cranes I create, edited in Adobe Illustrator. I used magazines to create the cranes, so the text still comes through, the blacks. I think the detail that was brought through when editing the photograph in Adobe illustrator. The final image is an origami crane I created from a poster. This crane is quite large and I hung it from the ceiling, because after looking at the collaborative work of Andrew Rae and Chrissie Macdonald I wanted to create an installation from the ceiling, so I combined my origami skills with their ideas. The use of the bright coloured poster paper, works quite well with the film as it is quite childish and fun.

To make the piece more dimensional the cranes will be at different sizes and decorated differently. They shall hang from ribbon attached to the lid, so the piece looks quite fancy.

Jar Design - MERMAID MAGIC

MERMAID MAGIC

This jar is a representation of  my deep water dreams. As a child who loved watching Disney films on repeat, I really liked the character Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Under water life appears so amazing, and through this jar I want to show the times when I wished I could breathe underwater and build my own palace. Although my vision of real deep sea life have been tainted by an over-watching of Disney films, I think  it is quite beautiful so want to recreate this beauty in the jar. The jar will be filled with blue coloured water, and the glass of the jar will be stained glitter which shows magic. Inside the jar I will stick down shells to show underwater. I will also put confetti into the jar, so that when shaken the bits of confetti can float about. I really want the jar to look magical and so hopefully the outcome will be as I hope.
